History & Background

The “Hammersmith” dance consists of groups of four individuals coordinating a complex series of claps, interspersed with collective dancing. There is some dispute to the provenance of this dance, as to whether it is from Germany, Austria, or even Holland!

According to folkdance.com :

Orignally this dance was performed by M (men) only, and at the end they would run to find a girl to walz with. In modern times, it is often done by cpls (couples)… When mixed cpls do the dance, instead of the big circle at the end, M (men) … may even steal the other lady if they wish.”
